Rules: Level 3, Standard design
Mass: 10 tons
Power Plant: 60 Leenex I.C.E.
Cruise Speed: 64.8 km/h
Maximum Speed: 97.2 km/h
Armor Type: Star Slab/3 Standard
Armament:
1 Blackwell B75 Machine Gun
1 Apple Churchill 442x TAG TAG
1 Grenade Launcher
Manufacturer: Outback Industries
Location: Offerman (OI)
Communications System: Dalban StarLink II
Targeting & Tracking System: Garret Fib with TAG
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
By the end of the 31st Century the proliferation of the Arrow missile
artillery system throughout the Inner Sphere created a market for TAG-equipped
vehicles to serve as artillery spotters. Recognizing this need Outback
Industries sought to produce a light, inexpensive vehicle utilizing off the
shelf components. The result was the Zapata Fire Support Team Vehicle. Named
for a cavalry officer from the former Raven Legion mercenary unit, the
Zapata's resemblance to standard armored personnel carriers is considered an
asset due to the fact that such vehicles often receive a lower targeting
priority when compared to other designs.
==Capabilities:==
Built upon a 10 ton armored personnel carrier chassis, the Zapata's Leenex
engine is not only renowned for its reliability but able to run on any
combustible fuel available without modification allowing the vehicle to reach
speeds up to 97 kph. Protected by two and a half tons of the same StarSlab/3
armor that went to war with Kerensky, the Zapata isn't meant to slug it out
with enemy forces but can withstand at least one hit by an Inner Sphere large
laser. For defense, the vehicle sports a turret mounted Blackwell B75 machine
gun with a half ton of ammunition. For additional protection, a Scatter Shot
vehicle grenade launcher mounted on the front hull allows the crew to deploy a
smoke screen to cover a hasty retreat should the need arise.
Mounted
co-axially in the turret with the machine gun is the Target Acquisition Gear
system that allows the Zapata to call in accurate artillery strikes on a
hostile position while a rear mounted trailer hitch provides the ability to
pull up to a 10 ton cargo trailer behind it for added utility.
==Variants:==
A number of variants have been produced allowing the Zapata to develop into a
family of tracked vehicles:
The Zapata (CP) variant strips off the turret, TAG
and weapons to add in a rear compartment filled with the necessary equipment
to act as an armored Command Post vehicle. While not a full Mobile HQ it is
still capable of providing coordination to local friendly formations.
The Zapata (Field Kitchen) variant follows the lead of the Command Post
variant save for the fact that it houses a field kitchen capable of feeding
150 troops.
The Zapata (Utility) variant follows the CP and Field Kitchens but maintains
three tons of configurable cargo space capable of carrying everything from
munitions to a full platoon of soldiers.
The Zapata (Mortar) carrier houses a Mech Mortar/1 and a single ton of reloads
allowing it to provide indirect fire support to friendly units.
==Deployment==
The a number of prototypes were delivered to the AFFS in early 3099 and a
number of Federated Suns aligned mercenary units for field testing prior to
the Zapata being offered for general sale and export. The reviews for the
vehicle gave high marks for vehicle reliability and ease of use with some
minor criticism that it was not a ground breaking or cutting edge design. A
full production run began on Offerman in the Federated Suns Outback at the
beginning of 3100.
