Overview:
Conceived in the early 3070‘s by UOC engineers in lieu of viewing the performance of the powerful Dagger fighter in service with the AFFS, they sought to build their own equivalent. With resources for XL engines already going into interceptor projects like the Corax however, funding for another fighter design was short in the Outworlds Alliance. Thus, a cheaper alternative was opted for.
Capabilities:
Using a standard fusion engine, the designers put out an air frame that comes out costing about half of what the fighter it was modeled after costs. It maintains a similar speed profile and weapons configuration. It‘s main shortcoming is it‘s relatively lighter armor. Despite being five tons heavier, it has a full six tons less ferro-aluminum armor protecting it than the Dagger.
The Aven has the same role in mind as it‘s inspirator: shoot down enemy fighters. As a dogfighter it is a blend of nasty close range fire power and manueverability, with adequate thrust power for close-quarter accelerations. The main weapon is a Mydron Tornado Rotary Autocannon, obtained from the Federated Suns via an agreement that a portion of the first production run would be theirs. Unknown to the Davions however, a similar agreement had been struck with House Kurita for their supplyment of the Diverse Optics Type 20P Lasers that the fighter uses three of in each frame.
With five tons of ammunition stored behind the fighter‘s nose for the Rotary Autocannon, Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment was uitilized in the frame to limit the damage that would be caused by a cook over or weapon failure. Because of the nature of aerospace though, and the fact that the heatsink dissipation rate is surplus in the design, some pilots have given feedback that wishes another half ton of armor had been slapped onto the aircraft instead.
Variants:
Three variants exist of the Aven. There exists a Davion Variant, the T6 which removes one of the pulse lasers and some of the autocannon ammunition and one ton of armor to mount an advanced targeting computer, increasing it‘s accuracy.
The E4 is an escort variant in use by the Outworlds Alliance Air Wings that removes one of the pulse lasers to add 30 percent additional internal fuel capacity. This allows it to stay aloft for extended periods even after detaching any drop tanks.
There is also suspect of a final variant of unknown designation that has been seen only in the ranks of the OA, and interestingly has been reported seen with Clan Snow Raven elements in the OA and near the Draconis periphery. It is said to use an advanced variant of the pulse lasers and a different cockpit setup, though no specimens have been captured to confirm these suspicions.
