Brogan Light Omni Tank

Postby Vampire » Mon Jun 19, 2017 7:53 am

Overview:

Omni technology, employed so spectacularly first by the Clans and quickly adopted by the Inner Sphere, gave massive tactical flexibility not only to combat commanders, but greatly eased logistical support to any military command. Where once units needed a wide variety of individual units to fulfil multiple roles, a command that has the luxury of fielding Omni units now could feasibly outfit their BattleMechs according to tactical requirements.

While OmniMech and OmniFighter designs had swiftly flooded the modern battlefields, much less resources had been channeled to the design of OmniVehicles. Despite proliferation of combined arms tactics, combat vehicles continued to be viewed as second class battle units, where the much lower average cost of a vehicle when compared to a ‘Mech saw reluctance to divert resources to Omni-fy vehicles. Instead, military commands simply purchased a large pool of vehicles to cater to their needs.

Limited by the inherent shortcomings of their chassis, only designs such as the Manteuffel and Ajax employed by the Inner Sphere, and the Clans’ Epona Pursuit Tank were designed from the ground up as true front line combat units. Other vehicular designs continued along the tradition of being support units. Machines such as the Combine Schiltron wheeled tank was designed for long range fire support. The Wolf Dragoon designed Bandit and Badger, as well as Word of Blake Bolla Stealth tank were to be utilized mainly as infantry carriers. Indeed, the restrictions of a vehicle compared to a BattleMech meant that vehicle manufacturers have long recognized the logic of limiting their design through specialization. More recent designs like the Zibler, Hepaestus, Heimdall, DCMS Byakko assault hovercraft, the Lyran Eisenfaust assault gun and Lowe MBT gave vehicular centric units additional, but still limited choices.

In the mercenary industry, most fill their rosters with BattleMechs. Indeed, mercenary units like The Furies, Canned Heat and Bad Dream are the (very) exceptions. Another such unit, albeit a sub-unit of a larger command, is the Black Stars’ Sharp Shooters detachment.

At the time of their birth, the Shooters were a hodgepotch unit put together with what it could lay its hands on, consisting of a single Morningstar CCV and some infantry. With years of fighting across much of the Inner Sphere and Periphery against uncountable different opponents under its belt, the Shooters TO&E evolved over time. The need to be flexible against changing battlefield needs and the combat doctrine of operating as a unit saw the Sharp Shooters eventually switching out their hardware for OmniVehicles with C3 technology. While many would balk at the amounts of cash the mercenary unit threw towards equipping themselves with Manteuffel and Ajax tanks, these capable units had proved their worth time and again.

When the Vampire OmniTank debuted, the Shooters found that its combination of above average speed, excellent armour protection, wide variety of weapon loadout, and the ability to be stored in light vehicle bays onboard DropShips made the design a perfect fit for the vehicular centric unit.

Like most things linked with the Sharp Shooters, the machine that was to be given the strange name of Brogan light tank started off as a bet among the mercenaries. Heavily dependent on Badger IFVs that they acquired to mechanize their growing Battle Armour units, both vehicular crew and BA troopers complained that the Wolf Dragoon originated design was simply too lightly protected and armed to survive the modern battle field. Protracted discussions and debate raged as the Battle Armour detachment of the Sharp Shooters petitioned for the replacement of the Badger with other IFVs like the Saxon, Giggins, Maxim Mk II or even the Trajan.

It was during one of their many heated debates that the Shooters’ chief tech, Wedge “Fix-It” Donovan, commented that none the designs fulfilled the criteria that was laid out, and remarked that he and his team could do much better than any manufacturer.

“Pfff. I’ll swallow my boots if you could.”

That retort by Lieutenant General Zhao Zi Long would be the genesis of a modification project that, with feedback, comments and sarcasm from all quarters, grew beyond the scope of the initial bet. The technical staff of the Sharp Shooters would heavily modify the Badger chassis to come up with what would be the Brogan - named after the boots that Zhao was to consume.

Capabilities:

Based on the tracked 30 ton chassis of the Badger, the Brogan was given limited amphibious features to enhance its tracked ability to traverse not only all but the roughest of terrain, but over bodies of water as well. While the limited amphibious hull did not grant the Brogan the ability to travel over water at the same speed as its hover counterparts, the ability of a tracked vehicle to traverse water terrain would give it an element of surprise that enemies would not expect.

The Sharp Shooters techs also switched out the GM 180 fusion engine for much more powerful Hermes 210 XL Fusion Engines salvaged over the years, from destroyed Word of Blake Galleon tanks of 103 variant, Tufana hover tanks, and even a crippled Raven light ‘Mech. Its maximum speed of nearly 120 km/h makes the Brogan one of the fastest tracked combat vehicle anywhere in known human space, matched or exceeded only by the GAL-103 Galleon, some light wheeled vehicles, hovercraft and VTOLs, thus allowing it to get in and out of any situation quickly.

Stripping the chassis down to its bare bones, the brittle and thin Protech 6 armour plating was swapped out for seven and a half tons of NHB Type X Heavy Ferro-Fibrous armour that was used to protect the Vampire OmniTank, providing the Brogan with the absolute maximum protection for its weight class. The addition of CASE gave the crew further protection against catastrophic engine failure and ammunition explosion. To allow the vehicle to tow a second unit that could be carrying mission equipment, spare parts and ammunition, support weapons, or simply to lug salvage back, a trailer hitch was fixed at the rear of the light tracked vehicle. 8 tons of pod space gave each of the Brogan configurations sufficient room to achieve what the various requests called for.

Interestingly, the Primary Configuration was NOT that of an IFV, despite the initial reason for the creation of the Brogan. Instead, it was designed as a scout and outfitted with some of the most advanced technology available to the Inner Sphere due to the need for the Shooters for such a machine. A Bloodhound Active Probe sits alongside a pair of extended range medium lasers in the turret, while an Angel ECM suite not only protects the machine against most electronics targeting systems, but blocks enemy transmissions as well. Finally, the 2 tons of communications equipment salvaged from a Swift Wind Scout car is powerful enough to transmit data and messages as far out as JumpShips at standard jump points, and even bounce transmissions using orbiting satellite systems to communicate with units on the other side of a planet. The combination of a highly advanced electronics package, relatively small physical size and speed would allow a Brogan in Primary configuration to keep in contact with friendly forces while operating deep behind enemy territory.

With a 4 ton infantry/Battle Armour bay, the IFV variant was designated the Alpha configuration. After debating long and hard on what would be the best weapon on a battlefield taxi to support the troops it was transporting, the Sharp Shooters settled on a single turret mounted MML-5 launcher. Even though it was only supplied with a single ton of ammo, the launcher itself would allow the tank crew to choose the type of missiles based on what they feel would be most suitable for the mission in hand to support their precious cargo of infantry or Battle Armour troops.

One of the cornerstone of the Black Stars founding policy was to never leave their own behind. Indeed, individual members, combat or otherwise, were considered more valuable than any piece of equipment. With that in mind, Bravo Configuration was outfitted with a 3 theater MASH unit that was further backed by a pair of paramedic bay to cater to those of less critical injuries. A searchlight was mounted in the turret for night time rescue and recovery missions, while a single laser AMS provides additional protection to the Bravo Configuration in case a trigger happy enemy missed the massive red crosses that would be unfurled on the sides of the machine.

Building on the battle doctrine that vehicles usually supported each other and work as part of a team, Charlie Configuration performs a role that scarce few other units do. The turret holds a TAG to allow this Brogan to call in Arrow IV strikes, semi-guided long range missiles and bombs. A Narc launcher fed by a 2 ton bay similarly makes the Charlie Brogan more dangerous than its opponent might think, allowing friendly units to unleash their missiles against Narc tagged targets. A C3 slave also makes it possible for the Charlie Brogan to be part of a C3 linked company, calling in far more firepower than its own single extended range medium laser.

Designed to use the capabilities offered by the Charlie configuration, the Delta variant mounts quad MML-3 launchers on its turret. A 2 ton ammo bay allows a mix of missile type, giving the already flexible Brogan an even higher level of unpredictability to its foes.

Finally, a single plasma rifle with 20 rounds gives the Epsilon Brogan what many considered the most efficient and destructive weapon that a vehicle could carry in the modern era. Effective against BattleMechs and devastating against vehicles, Battle Armour and infantry, this weapon gives the lightweight Brogan to punch way above its weight class.

Despite the XL engine and generous protection, only the Primary Configuration of the Brogan cost over 5m c-bills, with the Charlie (Tactical Support) configuration costing an interested buyer slightly over 4m c-bill. All other configurations would carry price tag of around 3.5m c-bills a piece.

Deployment:

Only the Black Stars’ Sharp Shooters sub-unit currently deploys the Brogan, and only two working examples. The different configurations had been field tested on these two chassis with very satisfying results during the Stars’ various campaigns. A third chassis, which was actually the first prototype currently sits in a the vehicular bay on the Black Stars land hold of Erdvynn after engine failure saw it explode in spectacular fashion during its second trial.

Baron Zhao had thus far managed to put off calls for him to eat his boots until the Brogan could be put into mass production. Rumours were that the Sharp Shooters were looking to assemble their own Brogan tanks using the considerable facilities onboard their heavily modified Snowden Mining Space station as well as restored manufacturing RWR plants on Erdvynn itself.

Still reading but... when you wrote hotchpotch did you mean hodgepodge? (Merriam webster identifies the former as a type of stew is why I ask it certainly is not a word I've seen used often.)

yeah I've seen autocorrect ruin more than my fair share of forum and facebook posts.

SO query.

When i think of tanks that are transporting troops, more and more I think about, can they tow anything behind them, additional cargo space for support weapons for example, or towable artillery pieces.

I'm not as familiar on what those rules do but would be curious to know whether the Brogan could server in this sort of role also.

If not, and it can be done with only slightly upgrading, I'd suggest uptonning, or even creating a version that can that might be able to come off the same assembly line.

Well you can either put the Trailer Hitch as a piece of equipment at the cost of one slot or use the Design Quirk which also costs zero points. Either way it does not impact the c-bill cost and you get the tow vehicle functionality.

Though if you use the Brogan for the purpose that's like using a Rolce-Royce to plow a wheat field or haul hay.

Indeed. I was trying to look through the rules for trailer hitch and as Dulio said, it doesn't impact on c-bills cost.

I imagine Dulio's comments about the Brogan being a Rolce-Royce is due to the XLFE. Still, it is still a possibility if the detachment if IFV and troops are not required to move anywhere at fast pace, and that they are expecting to be able to unlimber towed equipment with reasonable safety.

Rolls Royce... heh.... no.

Once you put a tow mechanism it could bring anything from towing salvage off the battlefield (potentially) to trailers of supplies, or artillery. The latter is probably the more likely scenario, they could come in with a line of artillery and a few towed 'buses' if you will drop the personnel and artillery and then attack enemy lines while supported from nearby artillery that wasn't there earlier.
