.................................................

One day while expounding over cups of sake on the lance make-up of a new ‘Mechwarrior ‘s hardware choices, an Alshain Weapons Engineer and a Wakazashi Enterprises Engineer were discussing the possibility of the inclusion of a Panther and a light went off inside the Wakazashi Enterprises Engineer’s head. He looked across the small table he and his fellow engineer were seated at and blurted out, in his native tongue, “That gives me an idea on a new BattleMech design. A 55 ton Panther, ie the BLACK PANTHER!” Hence the Black Panther was born. Six months later the first prototype rolled off the factory manufacturing line.

The design was originally commissioned in 3092 in conjunction with the Draconis Combine to provide fire support for other light, fast-moving 'Mech units, with the first models going to the Pesht Military District to fight bandits along the Periphery border. The original prototype underwent a revision after the catastrophic Battle in the Bjarred Prefecture in 3095, when it was discovered that its main weapon, a Tiegart PPC, was inefficient in both range and firepower. Luckily the Black Panther had also proved itself to be quite resilient, carrying ten and one half tons of armor, and navigable, due to five Lexington Lifter jump jets split between both legs and one in its center torso for a combined jumping distance of 150 meters, thus an endeavor to fix its one defect was made by Wakazashi engineers by exchanging the Tiegart PPC with a Lord's Light II Heavy Particle Projection Cannon. The change in weaponry, along with an exclusive armor composite, gave the BPT-1A Black Panther a new lease on life, such that the manufacture can’t keep up with the demand and there has been an 11 month backlog on orders for the Black Panther since its introduction.

The Black Panther is a high tech generation of the prototype model introduced by Wakazashi Enterprises. The chassis has been built using pilfered construction techniques and the savings in weight used to add a Streak fire control system to the missile launcher, as well as upgrading the Tiegart PPC to a Lord's Light II HPPC. Two additional heat sinks were added above what the OEM powerplant shipped with and one ton more armor, along with more advanced communications equipment protected by a ‘Guardian Angel’ ECM suite and a lighter, more robust fire-control computer than the earlier prototype complete with a Cyclops-Beagle Active Sensory Probe. The finished production model of the BPT-1A from Wakazashi is protected by ten and one half tons of Maximillian 60 Ferro-Fibrous armor, providing the 'Mech with one hundred percent of its maximum armor protection on the Alshain 560-Carrier Composite chassis.

Equipped with a 275 XL Hermes Fusion Engine, the Black Panther has a ground speed of well over 80 kph that allows it to keep up with most heavy 'Mechs and all assault 'Mechs while being outpaced by only lighter 'Mechs. However, the Black Panther remains very maneuverable through the use of five jump jets that maximizes mobility on the battlefield. The ten double heat sinks that the Black Panther mounts are barely sufficient to handle its heavy heat load of this configuration.

The Black Panther's primary weapon is a Lord's Light II HPPC mounted in the right arm and boasting one of the highest damage outputs of any weapon. Unfortunately the HPPC is also one of the most heat intensive, though many Senior Draconian officers see it as a good learning opportunity for officer trainees to spend their first years piloting the Black Panther and gain experience managing its heat curve with ten double strength heat sinks. The HPPC is backed up by a reliable Ceres Arms ER Large Laser, a Guided Technologies 2nd Gen Streak Short Ranged Missile System, a Diverse Optics Sunfire ER Medium Laser, and twin BlazeFire LongShot ER Small Lasers. This mix of long and short-range weapons allows the Black Panther to stay at range and inflict damage on its enemies and close in and use the lasers and SSRM-6 to make the killing blow.

In the 1A configuration the Black Panther is a devastating close combat 'Mech and battle armor killer that is capable of delivering a powerful barrage with its four varying range ER Lasers bundle. As a close support 'Mech, it is highly adept at swooping in and helping deliver the final blow, especially as its scattering streak six missiles can exploit and cripple exposed systems. And its heavy armor makes the Black Panther well-suited for hand-to-hand brawling and urban combat. Notably, the Guided Tech Streaks and their one ton ammunition stores are placed so far forward in the 'Mech's torso that the Black Panther has a front-heavy center of gravity, causing MechWarriors unfamiliar with the design's forward-lean while running, to be prone to falling over when moving at high speeds in difficult terrain.

Looks good to me, really like the inclusion of artwork.

If I had to dock it on anything, it could use some fluff. Background, capabilities, notable mechwarriors, that sort of thing. Those elements are often helpful in a flavor sort of way.

The only other thing I can think to mention is that you could apply the Quirks System to this 'mech. All the new ones are getting Quirks now. I was so-so about it when it came out, didn't pay much attention to it, but its growing on me.

But the 'mech itself, TRO wise looks solid to me.

Ditto on the lack of fluff and picture.

Design wise, while the loadout seems to make this a deep raider sort of machine due to the mostly energy reliant weapons and advanced electronics package. However, a movement curve of 5/8/5 and maximum armour make it more a urban/close range fighter.

My main issue with this machine is that it won't be able to fire most, let alone all of its weapons without overheating. The design has only 10 double heat sinks for 20 heat points, and firing the heavy PPC alone will consume 15 of them. The MechWarrior would probably have to choose between that PPC and the ERLL, plus a blast from its SSRM or double mediums - but probably not both if it doesn't want to overheat.

Maybe its the tanker in me, but I don't like machines that easily overburden its heat capacity unless it comes with TSM.
