==Overview:==
“Artillery brings dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl.” -Frederick the Great

Artillery, while not the dominant force on the battlefield anymore can still play an important part role in modern fights. For centuries the largest of these is the mobile long tom, but this antiquated system has problems of its own. For starters it has a slow speed, crawling around the battlefield at only 20 kilometers per hour going down hill when it is not carrying its trailer. Even the Federated Suns when they combined all the trailers into one vehicle did nothing to address the speed, a danger in these times when elementals can easily catch up with the crews of these vulnerable vehicles.

It also has another vulnerability to not just itself, but to a larger force- it has a logistical tail. Vehicles that need fuel will need trucks to move the fuel, which means more men to be assigned to fuel trucks, and more spare parts to repair the trucks that deliver said fuel. With a fusion engine the needs are reduced to food, water, and ammunition for the tank.

Coming off the success of the Oranger, Blackwell hoped to create another success with an artillery platform simply named Frederick.

==Capabilities:==
The Frederick uses a traditional self propelled gun layout with engine in the front and a fighting compartment in the rear. The compartment is very spacious to move about in as the crew feeds one of the thirty rounds of 203mm ammunition. The task of loading the cannon is fast thanks to the mechanical system that speeds up loading to the point where the cannon can use Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact. This is paired with the communications system that can allow for communications with orbital satellites or ships for receiving fire missions.

Crew protection is also of a high priority, all the ammunition is stowed in blow out compartments and while that means the vehicle is knocked out, the crew will survive. The crew is protected by nine tons of vehicular stealth armor. The reason for the stealth system is to help conceal the unit on the battlefield to guard against counter battery fire. The armor is thick enough to take a single direct hit from a long tom on all sides and the armor in the front is thick enough to allow it to act as an assault gun, although this is not recommended. In addition a pair of vehicle grenade launchers were installed to allow it to pop smoke to help it escape. In addition to defend against the increasing use of missiles on the battlefield, an AMS was installed.

For defense against infantry a pair of flame throwers were installed on the commander’s copula.

The engine on the Frederick propels the SPG to a modest 54kph, while slower than the oranger it is within the speeds of many heavy units used by the inner sphere and far faster than the heavier long tom artillery unit that is currently in use.

Its an okay design but there's nothing to it that really "does it" for me, ya know?. And I am not sure about the name... maybe just Frederick? Seems wordy, but that's just me.

It's a cheap artillery piece. Nothing fancy or exciting.

And I used "The great" on it to distinguish it from a 50T long tom piece I had also designed, something using a XL fusion engine. But I noticed there is a dislike of XL fusion engine vehicles.

Made a change to the name, dropped the armor for Stealth armor, and modified the fluff.

My main issue is the inclusion of CASE. This is a "in the rear with the gear" vehicle, not something that is likely to be deployed anywhere there's a likelihood of it getting jumped. As such, I feel the CASE is a little pointless.

A minor issue, I know.

I'm going to say that the inclusion of CASE is a plus in my mind as its inclusion in the design is negligible in terms of both weight and cost compared to the benefits of not having your crew be turned into instant chunky salsa should the ammunition decide that it wants to detonate when you suffer a critical hit (or because you attempted to play dukes of hazard with a convenient earth ramp that someone just left laying around)

Additional benefits include:
Reduced likelihood of writing letters to family members.
Improved crew morale and confidence because of the above and the appearance that you actually care if they live or die.

Well, while the SPG is not on the front line, it isn't immune to counter battery fire which can happen. As pointed out, the fact that it is .5 tons is nothing lost, and the people inside can have confidence in that their equipment has their crew's safety in mind as they fight.

....

I hate it when my crews are reduced to "chunky salsa."

Thank you so much for that... vivid... image that's now in my head, Duchess. lol
