Overview
The original plans go back some 10 years when Earthwerks began to see the need for mobile fire platforms in and around any heavily built-up defenses. Early design work imagined a battlemech capable of mounting itself on the edge of a perimeter wall or castle turret. The reality of that was much harder to realize, as a number of setbacks and surprise production costs came up. Notably, a shippment of VOX engines for the test models went missing, or were stolen, and it took Earthwerks a few years to be able to replace them.

Capabilities
The Skoebel Legacy was it’s main inspiration, but the design team didn’t feel that the bipedal design made the mech stable enough to handle repeated, accurate firings on it’s LRMs. The obvious choice was to move to a quad leg design.
Two LRM 20s were mounted on each Armand given four tons of ammo, with the idea being that in a defensive situation, the Vigilis would be able to return to the front lines quick enough if pulled to reload. Two Small ER lasers were also mounted on each side to be able to close the gap created by the minimum range of the LRMs.

To aid in accuracy at long ranges, a targeting computer was added as well. To make sure that the Vigilis would be able to mount those high defensive walls, some weight was sacrificed for a larger engine and more jump jet power. The hopeful trade off was that the missing armor would be made up in speed and flexibility. The Vigilis also carries a Guardian EMC Suite to detect any hidden units attempting to approach what it is defending.

Variants
While no variants official exist for the Vigilis, the designers have made it known that there are two variants in the workss. The first replaces one LRM with an AC to help increase the short range capabilities of the Vigilis. The second variant decreased the engine size to make space for a C3i unit as well as a little more armor, to enable the Vigilis to work closely with other Vigilis or front line mechs to assist with aiming.
