Morgan Chan refused to allow himself the luxury of collapsing onto the floor of the DropShip in relief even as the captain announced with an incredibly phlegmatic tone that the vessel had successfully docked with the Scout class JumpShip and would be making the jump out of the system within thirty seconds. With no sign of their pursuers detected, their mission was now seconds away of being a success - short of mechanical failure preventing their JumpShip to make its FTL hop out of the system.

As the ten seconds countdown was announced, Chan's grip on the sonic stunner tightened even as he felt the quickened thumping of his heart. It was only when he was finally subjected to the familiar gut wrenching sensation of a jump did the grizzled soldier finally allowed a smile to creep onto his face. The stoic voice of the captain sounded over the DropShip's PA system again, confirming that they had arrived on their next destination - an uncharted system nearly thirty light years away from where they were mere seconds again.

Morgan Chan holstered the non lethal weapon and reached up towards the gapping wound in his mid-section, the grin on his face widening. The Clan manufactured Resgate power armour suit that he was encased in had been pumping harjel both into the damaged armour plating as well as his wound that helped his body absorb shock and control the bleeding as the thick, dark liquid also attempted to seal the breach in the armour. He knew he was not feeling any pain because of the effects from what Clan Elementals called 'hero juice' now coursing through his body as well as the pure sense of exhilaration he felt, and probably would need the attention of their onboard medical officer.

Still, it had been quite a while since he had participated in one of their operations, even longer still for one that ran a high chance of seeing combat. The man of Asian heritage looked up towards the ceiling of the cargo hold he was in and closed his eyes. He imagined being able to see through the metallic shell of the thirty seven hundred ton DropShip as he swept his sights from the nose to the rear of the spheriod shaped vessel in appreciation. He did not know how his contact came to know about its location, but it was an opportunity Morgan Chan simply could not pass on. Assembling a strike team, pulling together the necessary assets, drawing up the action plans with alternatives and contingencies were all completed within two weeks before they moved in.

The ex-mercenary was certain that some of those spec ops folks he knew would have applauded how they had pulled off the mission - rapid and efficient movement into the target area, minimal collateral damage and zero fatality, with Chan himself probably the sole casualty. He sighed in satisfaction as a couple of medical crew finally approached his position. Chan allowed his armour to be removed as he was next laid onto a stretcher.

The bespectacled medical officer squinted at the injury and growled at the veteran warrior. "That was cutting it a bit too close, don't you think."

"Yes it was." Morgan Chan shot the man an infuriatingly silly smirk and he spread his arms wide. "But I'd say it was all worth it."

Morgan Chan squinted in barely contained frustration at the piece of paper that he had placed on top of his table. The words on it seemed to have been hastily scribbled on. It was something that he had strictly reinforced upon his... less than legal operations - that there should NEVER be any electronic trail that could lead to anyone within the network.

After the rather exotic cache of black market hardware he had managed to gather over the previous few months, what his people had put together for this round was overwhelmingly disappointing. Even the eye-popping presence that a bloody Lysander Submarine Carrier could not deflect away the mediocracy of what was otherwise nothing more than a discounted shopping list.

The former mercenary lifted his hand and gingerly poked at his chest and smiled slightly. The wound was nearly all healed.

Maybe it would time for him to get his hands dirty in the field again...

Morgan Chan cursed as hundred and thousands of purchase requests from the Military Hardware Brokerage continued to pour in from all corners of the Inner Sphere and beyond. The Broker had to give it to whoever pulled it off. Overnight, all mercenary commands registered with the Mercenary Review and Bonding Commission were gifted sums ranging from 10 million c-bills to over 25 million, and not for the lack of trying, there was no way the MHB could prove any irregularities with these sudden influx of monies.

And thus Chan and his staff had been overwhelmed with processing said orders. That, and the small matter of the veteran soldier refreshing the monthly Black Market, a regular event that was far from regular in terms of required actions that he had promised himself to be diligently involved in ever since he was appointed to his current position. Out of no choice, he had assigned the task to some of his most trusted folks to handle.

What had pissed Chan off the most was the Diamond Sharks seemingly being able to instinctively smell blood in the waters. Taking advantage of Morgan Chan's distractions, the Clanners had bypassed the usual proxies and agents that Chan had established over the last year or two, wrestling control back into their own hands to deal direct with buyers. There were already reports of them offering their trinkets to the weapons hungry Liberty Hold. Were they the ones behind all the mayhem?

Morgan Chan snorted. First, he would clear the massive backlog that the MHB faced. Than, he would deal with the Sharks and show them what he thought of their ill-placed confidence in their ability to get away with their betrayal.

A second before, there was nothing but inky darkness. In the blink of an eye, a quarter of a million tons of metal, steel and whatever needed in the construction of a JumpShip shimmered into existence. Unlike most JumpShips, the Tramp's body was not long and slender. Rather it was a more robust construct, along which a trio of DropShips were attached.

Onboard in his own bunk, Merchant SaFactor Sarkis reached out and lightly grasped the half filled cup on his table. For the many years and uncountable number of jumps he had experienced, he could never get used to the sensation of the after effects. Not that he minded them of course. They were a small price to pay.

Most people thought of the massive machines of war as crucial in any military campaign. Most people would be wrong. While many a fortunes had been made in the sale of such items as BattleMechs, much, MUCH more were made from what were even more important - expendables and disposables like spare parts and ammunition, food, stationary, toiletries, construction material, medical supplies... the list was endless.

Yet, nothing captures the imagination of the war machines. Sarkis shrugged as he downed the liquid. All the better. Especially now that Sarkis had managed to cut out the so-called Military Hardware Brokerage and is selling Clan tech straight to customers.

Time to make a killing.

Morgan Chan looked at the bustling city below him from his office, looking but not seeing. It had been a very tumultuous year, and the way things had been development, more of the same were to be expected.

He was, of course, one of those who loved mixing work with pleasure at every opportunity but he wondered about this time...

The grizzled former (and some would argue, still current) mercenary grinned to himself. If one couldn't have a little but of fun every once in a while, one's life is probably not worth living.

In the darkness of the night, a beast limped awkwardly forward, one of its four legs seemingly stiff and less mobile than the others. Despite its apparent hobble, the dark shape of the creature made surprisingly good process. The strange thing was, while there were noticeable deep tracks on the ground where the beast had traversed over, anyone who attempted to trace them would find said marks getting lighter and less visible, before completely disappearing after about half a dozen kilometres.

No sirens nor alarms were raised. Nobody seemed to run across the creature and its relentless march. A drifter managed to raise his head agonisingly from his intoxication induced sprawled slumber on the ground at the approaching sound of metal scrapping against the floor. The only witness to the sight would smile at the dark shape, threw a shadow of a salute at it before curling himself back into a huddle and going back to sleep.
The next day, every single Mercenary command (and that very difficult to quantify Clan unit we have) in known human space found an unmarked Uni ATAE-70 quad CargoMech painted in plain gunmetal grey waiting to be inspected. Discounting the misaligned knee actuator of the rear left leg, the IndustrialMech would be otherwise in pristine condition. A weathered piece of paper would be found in an equally worn envelop. Two lines of words in old school quill pen and ink writing were neatly inscribed on the paper.

“Dinnae laugh, dinnae smile
Hunt ‘a gowk ‘nother mile.”

If any MUCO can find out the origin and meaning of the above phrases, the MHB will allow you to exchange the quad IndustrialMech for ANYTHING of the same value (or below) off the MHB listing.
