Santos-class Assault Dropship

Postby Storywriter J. Allen » Thu Jun 29, 2017 9:42 pm

I finally found the TRO for the Santos-class Assault Dropship. Which was a vessel I designed that was added to the MHB ages ago.

==Overview:==
Charge in, cause them to panic, and strike.

The motto of a Santos-class Dropship Captain invokes thoughts of a fast-moving
predator. That is precisely what it's designers had in mind.

In 3074, spacecraft designers in the Taurian Concordat were given a virtual
blank check to come up with a new attack dropship. Their mandate was that it
had to be faster than any dropship flying and fast enough to outrun most
aerospace fighters, with enough firepower to crush a dropship of similar size
and challenge anything larger. Such a craft fit the Taurian mindset of a
virtually suicidal defense that would terrify any invader when they saw the
ship bearing down on their transports and jumpships before they had time to
bring their guns to bear against it.

It took the designers several years to acquire everything they wanted,
including specifications for advanced weaponry built in the Inner Sphere.

In 3079 the prototype took to the air. The Protector himself later decreed
that the ship would be named after David Santos, the Taurian Naval Officer who
led the Concordat fleet to victory over Tentativa and handed the Federated
Suns their greatest naval defeat.

In 3082 the Santos-class went into production, the scale of which was only
limited by the availability of some of the materials and weapons used in it's
construction. Soon after it's development, the Concordat was approached by an
offer from Irian Technologies, to export the needed materials in exchange for
a license to built the ship themselves. The Taurians reluctantly agreed, and
the Santos went into production on Taurus and on the League world of
Clipperton.

==Capabilities:==
The Santos-class was designed to charge in and strike before the enemy can
effectively react. Casual observers have compared it's likeness to the larger
Combine's Taihou-class Assault Dropship. The battery of four Heavy PPCs in
it's nose offer concentrated firepower that allows it to punch through the
hull of many dropships. Combined with a mind-numbing safe thrust of 5-Gs, the
Santos can even give warship captains reason for pause when those four weapons
are brought to bear with capacitors charged.

The ship's wing-mounted MMLs offer some additional firepower but the true
value lies in the missile system's inherent ability to switch ammunition types
as the ship closes on it's target. Two laser anti-missile systems were
installed to combat the threat of fighter launched Arrow IV and capital
missiles. Two rear-mounted ER Medium Lasers round out the weapons grid,
implimented solely to combat light aerospace fighters fast enough to intercept
the Santos.

The heart of the Santos is it's engine, which takes up a considerable
percentage of the ship's mass. The engine isn't particularly revolutionary in
design, it is based on larger engines designed to propell a larger dropship at
a more average combat dropship thrust profile. In the smaller and lighter
Santos, the high thrust-to-weight ratio virtually turns the ship into a
rocket.

The ship's quarters and living spaces are cramped with every inch of living
space valued. The comparatively large multi-station cockpit is the sole
exception. This was a psychological decision by designers, intended to make
active duty almost preferable to off-duty bunk time.

If the Santos has any weakness it is operational endurance. Computer
automation doesn't fully compensate for the small crew, making tours aboard a
Santos-class fairly strenous. In addition the ship's tiny cargo hold is barely
adequate. Most flights by a Santos Dropship are designed to be short, with
resupply or rest not far behind.

==Battle History:==
Three Irian prototypes of the Santos-class was stolen by Janos Marik II
loyalists and one was used in a nearly suicidal attack run on a Thera-class
Supercarrier operating over Simpson Desert. The unnamed Santos managed to get
past an entire heavy fighter wing and a pair of Merlin-class dropship escorts
to damage one of the Corinth's fighter bays. While maneuvering for another
pass the ship collided with a launching Shiva OmniFighter and was crippled
just before the Corinth's naval lasers incinerated it. Although the Santos
caused minimal damage, the craft's effectiveness at penetrating the battle
group's defenses prompted Fleet Command to in keep their Supercarriers farther
away from worlds in Janos Marik's control.

==Deployment==
The Santos dropship is being added to the Concordat Navy in surprising
numbers, with 25 constructed so far and many more planned. The ships are
intended to be a first line of defense against aggression by a Great House,
charging in to destroy jumpships and dropships in a manner reminiscent of the
famous Taurian fireships of the Reunification War that pummeled Star League
taskforces as soon as they appeared in a Concordat system.

Irian Technologies' purchase of a "periphery design" was surprising to
industry experts, but the dropship already put the FWLM on notice when Janos
Marik's supporters put a captured prototype into action. The FWLM has
currently ordered 4 of the dropships, but strong advocates in Fleet Command
are prompting discussion to double that number.

Deputy if you would like this data in some other format just let me know. I'd like to make sure we don't lose it again.

Since we have the TRO again, the Santos Dropship can be made available. I believe it got switched to No because the TRO was missing for a time.

It wouldn't be a bad thing to have it saved somewhere. Sure, send me the data in notepad or Word or whatever.
